DARE stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education. The program was
created in Los Angeles California in 1983 to combat the rise in drug use in
America's youth. The purpose of the DARE program is twofold:
To help young people recognize the danger of
drug use ;
and to reduce the rising level of violence
they face.
The DARE program is a seventeen week curriculum in which students in
the fifth grade learn what drugs are, what harm can come from the use of drugs,
ways to resist the pressure to use drugs, alternative ways to have fun without
drugs, building self esteem, and gang awareness. At the end of the DARE program
each student writes a plan to stay drug free.
Each year the Graham Independent School District's D.A.R.E. Program
graduates approximately 200 D.A.R.E. Students. The Graham Police Department is
proud to be an active part in preparing our youth to face the challenges of
Drug Abuse and Violence.
